1. World Rhythms by Annea Lockwood (37’32”) 1975
“World Rhythms was a work concerned with a practice of sustained listening into the world, and beyond. It expanded outward from many of the compositions and themes Annea Lockwood had been exploring since the 1960s. It sought to take those learnings and apply them to a new set of terrains and circumstances. Moreover, it suggested a sensing of sound that was drawn from profound curiosity, matched only by patience.
Requiring 10 speakers, five reel-to-reel machines, and a massive gong, World Rhythms is an ambitious project whose performances involve real-time audio-level changes. Lockwood takes different noises—from volcanic activity in Hawaii to spring peepers near the Mississippi River, crows around Essex, and hydroacoustic signals in the Tasman Sea—and weaves a tapestry in constant flux.”

2. Gravity Station from The Invisible City by BJNilsen (16’28”) 2010
“Recorded in Berlin, the album explores the potential of one of the very earliest synthesizers, the Subharchord stationed at Berlin’s Udk, a relic of former GDR engineering developed to explore subharmonic sound. Nilsen uses these sources and many others to weave complex, anachronistic and challenging narratives which never fail to immerse you into his world, exploring physical and psychogeographic relationships between sounds, whether savouring the crunch of snow underfoot or juxtaposing sheer scales of sound both artificial and supra-natural with a riveting unpredictability.

3. Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone by Jana Winderen (34’59”) 2018
The marginal ice zone is the dynamic border between the open sea and the sea ice, which is ecologically extremely vulnerable. The phytoplankton present in the sea produces half of the oxygen of the planet. During spring, this zone is the most important CO2 sink in our biosphere. In ‘Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone’ the sounds of living creatures become a voice in the current political debate concerning the official definition of the location of the ice edge.
